THE MORRIS & GWENDOLYN CAFRITZ FOUNDATION
JOB DESCRIPTION
FOUNDATION BACKGROUND: Incorporated in 1948, The Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of residents in the Washington metropolitan area.
The Foundation has three grant cycles annually, awarding on average $12 to $16 million to qualifying 501(c)(3) charitable organizations in the areas of Arts and Humanities, Community Service, Education and Health. POSITION TITLE: Community Services Program Officer
PURPOSE: To carry out the mission of the Cafritz Foundation by identifying and working with qualifying community-development nonprofits (including the areas of economic development, housing, workforce, leadership and civic engagement).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Develop in-depth knowledge of assigned program areas, including current issues and trends and key resource people and organizations.
•Review and assess grant proposals through an internal peer review process to reflect the Foundation’s priorities.
•Conduct site visits to grantees and potential grantees to assess program relevance, organizational integrity and stability.
•Formulate written recommendations on funding for Board consideration.
•Attend Board meetings to support recommendations and provide information.
•Review and approve evaluation reports for funded grantees and monitor their success in achieving key objectives. Serve as primary contact for grantees.
•Provide technical assistance to grantees to develop strategic approaches to organizational or systemic issues.
•Initiate meetings or reports in response to current and emerging needs, in cooperation with nonprofit organizations, foundation collaborative groups, government agencies and others that foster shared problem-solving and jointly undertake special projects.
•Participate with other foundations in affinity groups and other joint efforts, and represent the Foundation by serving as a member of funding collaboratives and Washington Grantmakers working groups and by attending meetings and conferences.
•Develop position papers and perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree with 5 to 7 years of relevant work experience in community services, nonprofit or grantmaking fields. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills in both written and oral communications. Must be detail-oriented, able to handle multiple tasks and work within deadlines. Knowledge of the DC metropolitan area and regional trends, preferred. Fluency in Spanish highly desirable. Experience with Microsoft Office products and database software required.
