STEP-BY-STEP PROPOSAL PROCESS
Step One: Fit with Funding Priorities
Please read the Funding Priorities carefully to determine if your organizationís programs or projects meet our funding criteria. Organizations also may complete the Eligibility Quiz to help determine their suitability for a grant from The Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation.
Step Two: Submitting the Proposal
To be considered for funding, an organization must submit a complete proposal, not a Letter of Inquiry (LOI). LOI's are not required.
Organizations may submit a proposal for only one deadline within a 12-month period. For example, if a proposal is submitted for the November 1 deadline, the organization must wait until the following November 1 deadline to submit another proposal.
If your organization meets our funding criteria, you are eligible to submit a proposal. The Foundation requires that all organizations use the Washington Grantmakers' Common Grant Application or submit your proposal through our online application system. If you have difficulty downloading the application, please call our office at (202) 223-3100 to have a copy emailed, faxed or mailed to you.
Arts and Humanities applicants are required to submit historical, financial and organizational data from the past two years into the DC Cultural Data Project, which will generate a funder report for the Foundation. The Cafritz Funder Report must be submitted as an attachment to your grant application. Further details can be found at DC Cultural Data Project.
Proposal deadlines are March 1, July 1 and November 1, and proposals must be received in the office, or submitted through our online application system, no later than 4:00 p.m. on these dates. Postmark dates do not apply. Please note, while they may be submitted anytime, proposals received between deadlines will be held for consideration in the following grant cycle.
Please note: Should the deadline date fall on a Saturday or Sunday, proposals will be accepted the following Monday.

Step Three: The Review and Funding Decision
Organizations will receive notification verifying receipt of their proposal. Each proposal is given careful consideration. If necessary, Foundation staff will schedule meetings with prospective applicants prior to making recommendations to the Board. Not all grant requests are considered at the Board meeting following their submission; some requests may be carried over to the following grant cycle. To ensure that each application is given fair consideration, the review and funding decision process generally takes four to six months from the deadline date for which the proposal was submitted.
All applicants will receive written notification regarding funding decisions.
In an effort to ensure the broadest response to the needs of our community, the Foundation's policy requires organizations to submit proposals annually regardless of prior funding.
Step Four: Reporting Requirements
Once approved, grantees must use the Washington Grantmakers' Common Report Format or submit all interim and final reports online through, our online application system as required in their grant agreement, unless otherwise specified.
Additionally, declarations, reports and new proposals must be submitted separately.
